The April 1956 eulogy delivered by Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Moshe Dayan at the funeral of Roi Rotberg, the security coordinator of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, expressed the spirit of the times more aptly than any other text or speech prepared at the time. It continues today to articulate succinctly Israel's positions in its dispute with the Arabs.

Nå, Moshe Dayan alltså. Han talar i april 1956 vid Roi Rotbergs begravning. Det han säger har största aktualitet.
In his short, eloquent speech (238 words in total ), Dayan displayed exceptional understanding regarding the suffering and hostility of the Palestinians, and concluded that violent struggle for control of the land is the "fate of our generation." We have no choice but to fight, declared Dayan. "This is our life choice," he said, "to be prepared and armed, strong and determined, lest the sword be stricken from our fist and our lives cut down."Dayan sade redan då, åtta år efter staten Israels grundande, vad andra sagt före honom men vad eftervärlden allt mer försökt glömma: för att överleva måste israelerna slåss, det är just denna judiska generations öde. Slåss ska här inte förstås i någon symbolisk mening. Helt konkret menar Dayan att israelerna måste vara beväpnade och beslutsamma. Ingen att hymla om. Israel hade inte funnits kvar annars. Dayan visste varför palestinierna hatade honom och andra israeler, och han använder just Gaza som utgångspunkt:
Let us not cast the blame on the murderers today. Why should we deplore their burning hatred for us? For eight years they have been sitting in the refugee camps in Gaza, and before their eyes we have been transforming the lands and the villages, where they and their fathers dwelt, into our estate..Och han fortsatte:
We are a generation that settles the land, and without the steel helmet and the cannon's fire we will not be able to plant a tree and build a home (…) Let us not be deterred from seeing the loathing that is inflaming and filling the lives of the hundreds of thousands of Arabs who live around us. Let us not avert our eyes lest our arms weaken.Nå, hatet är utgångspunkten. Hur kan det komma sig att dagens antikrigs-aktivister i Israel och Palestina inte tydligare talar om just detta? Ha´aretz påpekar att det som Dayan här säger nästan inte går att säga längre. Om man gör det blir man betraktad som förrädare. Det enda som låter sig sägas lindas i något slags allmänt resonemang om Israel som "offer" för hatiska palestinier. Men det gick att säga då, och fredsrörelsen borde, om inte annat, hänvisa till vad som sades och hävda dess giltighet än idag. Hur ska Gazas befolkning se på israelerna idag, om Dayan hade rätt 1956? Det måste formuleras!
Dayan skrev sitt tal på 45 minuter, han läste innantill på begravningen. Det var ett viktigt tal. Riktningsgivande. Principiellt.
